It wasn't until this year, or really this past month, that I really found my "quiet place." I wanted somewhere that I could go and be alone with God. I grab my Bible, a small notebook, and my favorite writing utensil, then hop on my bike and ride to the quiet and peaceful scenery of the woods. I spend as much time there as I can with the Lord. I do not always have time to stay for an hour; I always seem to be wishing for more time with God.. Isn't that the way it should be? Mark 1:35 tells us that Jesus went out by Himself in the morning to pray. "Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed." I admit, I do not always make it to my quiet place in the morning or, sadly, even everyday, but whenever I do, it is such a blessing to spend time alone in a special place with the One who is always wanting to spend time with me. There are other instances we find that Jesus goes off by Himself to pray. He tells us to do the same thing. "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you." (Matthew 6:6) Of course, this does not rule out praying in a group of people- Jesus even tells us to pray together (Matthew 18: 19-20), but we should make time in our daily life to spend time with Him alone. Treasure time with Jesus. Don't do all the talking though; take time reading God's Word to us. Make sure to write down anything that stands out to you. I, personally, like the SOAP method. (from soapstudy.com) I first heard of this at the beginning of my sophomore year of high school, in my Bible class. (Home-school life!) Scripture- Write out the verse or verses that stuck out to you in your reading. Observation- What did you observe about the scripture that struck you. This can be one sentence or a whole book. Application- How can you apply the observation so that it affects your life today? Prayer- Write out a prayer to God based on what you just learned and ask him to help you apply this truth in your life. Since I started using SOAP in my Bible study, I have noticed that I think more about what I am reading. I spend more time after I am finished reflecting on what I read. Try to spend extra time today with Jesus. Talk with Him. Sing to Him. Serve for Him!
