I remember lying awake one night, hearing the thunder rumble outside, and thinking about all the problems I was facing in my life. Friends, family, school. The list goes on and on!
Wouldn't you be? Try and imagine being in the boat with the disciples. Talking about the amazing miracle Jesus had performed- feeding over 5,000 people with just two fish and five loaves of bread, then a storm comes and you see a figure on top of the water. Some cry out, "It's a ghost!" But above the gusts of wind you hear the voice so familiar. "Do not be afraid! It is I." In the new testament, Jesus repeats time and time again, "Do not be afraid." He calls out to us to trust Him. Peter steps into the scene. Oh, Peter... he wanted Jesus to command him to walk on the water if He really was Jesus. Jesus granted that request. "Come." One word. Doesn't Jesus ask the same of us? To just come? Peter stepped out of the boat. His foot did not fall under the water, but was firmly on top of the surface. Step by step, Peter was above the waves, but when his eyes drifted and saw the wind howling around him, he became afraid. He began to sink into the water, crying out to Jesus, "Lord, save me!" Jesus did not allow Peter to drown; He caught him and asked him a question. "O, you of little faith, why did you doubt?" We are not told what Peter's answer was or if he did have an answer. So I will ask you (and myself, as well): why do we doubt the One who is in control? The God of the universe who commands all the storms in life. Why do we not trust Him? The passage ends in verses 32 and 33, "And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, 'Truly You are the Son of God.'" God has been teaching me to trust Him. The plans that I have set for me keep changing and I question why. Sometimes I am like Peter and see the storm rather than the One who controls the storms. I have a bad habit of wanting to be in control of my life. I believe that is why God is causing my life to change. I don't see what He is doing yet, but He knows what's best.
